Day 11: No.30 Zenraku-ji (善楽寺)

The Henro route to No.30 Zenraku-ji

The main temple of No.30 Zenraku-ji

Unlike the other temple, there’s no main gate in No.30 Zenraku-ji, and I came in directly to the precincts. It seems that there’s mochi-maki (rice cake throwing) event today, hence there were a lot of people outside. However, the strangest thing was that screaming voice is coming from the speaker unit…which seems to let people outside to know what is happening inside the temple. Hmm, I have no idea what is happening 🙂

It seems like people are screaming inside the main temple !?

The priests are screaming!

When I looked inside, the priests were actually screaming as they repeated the motion of flipping the folded Buddhist sutra book from top to bottom. I found TV camera in the room, so I wondered if I could see it on the news later, and sure enough, it was on TV. Apparently, it was a mochi-maki (rice cake throwing) event for unveiling the new head female priest.

Some pilgrims worship at Taishi-do, even during this chaotic event 🙂

“Are you walking pilgrim ?” I said yes, and was told that mochi-maki event will be held from 15:30. Unfortunately, I had to leave before that in order to be in time for the next temple.

This main gate seems to be for Tosa Shrine which is just next to Zenraku-ji
